What is Pinterest?

What is Pinterest?  Pinterest is a Virtual Pinboard.

Pinterest lets you organize and share all of the beautiful things you find on the web.  People use Pinterest to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.

Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people.  Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.

I have a board for my shop and I also add my own items to some boards.  I'm nearing 4000 pins and less than 100 are my own.

The guidelines of the site state it is Not for self promotion so tread carefully.  Tip the balance far to the other side.

Thanks, Caroline!  I have seen the same, where there is one board for one's shop.  As you say, I shouldn't think that's a problem:)

Hi Mary~ its fine to add you own items to Pinterest, I think they just don't want people to ONLY use it as a source of advertising or to spam people with nonstop promotional pins.  I have already seen some people doing this and I just unfollow them.   As Ellene mentioned, she scatters her items for sale in with other pins across her boards.  I have also seen people who have created just one board for all of their shop items, this seems to be ok too, I actually have followed some of these boards of shops that I like :).  I think the key is whatever you decide, do it in moderation.  But I'm still trying to figure it all out too so hoping others will give their opinions on this as well :)

I haven't put anything from my Etsy shop anywhere in my boards as I thought it was discouraged.  But if others are doing a little bit, I would like to do that, too (in moderation:)...

Diane~ it is truly addictive, I agree :) Ellene, I like how you are promoting your own items by mixing them in with other pins, I have been debating whether to start a board just for my shop or to just mix my items in with other things like you are doing. Am loving everyone's pins & boards :)

Good morning!  Coffee (or tea) time!

I love, love Pinterest! As I have created my boards, many of them are for promoting my own antiques and collectibles. One of the rules on Pinterest is not to 'pin' from one source, so it's fun to gather images from my IAO friends and other places and then from time to time, open my own website and post my latest product.

Out of 27 boards I've created, here's my "All Things Vintage" Board and my "Kitchen Collectibles" Board. I also just started one called "Vintage Repurposed."

Follow me! :)

Caroline, thank you for the invitation! I see a few of my friends here already! All I can say is that Pinterest can be addictive! It also can be window shopping! LOL  :O)

FYI:  You can embed Pinterest pins here on IAO!  Just click open the pin, and look to the right: you will see the "embed" option.  Click on "embed" and then copy the text box.  Back here on IAO, click the HTML button to the far right in the comment box and then paste the HTML code.  Click on HTML button again and you should see the pin.  Here's a funny pin AntointtesWhims posted earlier :)
