Well, It would probably be called a "ginger jar". These jars enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the late 1980's thru the 1990's. The color here, I think is Iron red. The marking might be original or it might be faked. Asian antiques and collectibles are notoriously difficult to ID. Even the experts get fooled. So, you could try (https://gotheborg.com/marks/20thcenturychina.shtml) for the marks, just to get part of the story on this, then I'd send photo's to a dealer/collector of Asian items, or take it in, if you've got a knowledgeable person in your area, in hopes of getting a better ID and possibly a value.
It's not easy, but you should be able to at least get an idea of what its worth. Best of luck to your brother!
