This CAST BRONZE ash tray was made by H.T. Bent, VP-Hull Master of Newport News Shipbuilding, Virginia. The keel was laid in 1943 but the ship was not commissioned until Sept, 1945. As a result only the name, "Midway" was put on the ashtray as the Hull designation and number (CV 41) were unknown at the time of casting.  It was made from the same metal as the keel and at the same time. "Several" were made and given as gifts to VIPs and dignitaries involved in the manufacturing of this warship. I am unable to find out how many "several" are. There were similar ashtrays made for other warships made at Newport News.

Size: 14-3/4" long, 3-3/4" wide and 2-3/4" tall. Weighs 5.15 lbs. Has been used, metal is blackened inside from cigarettes, but there is no smell that I could detect.

Color: True color is a dark grey similar to cast iron, flash causes it to look yellow. Need the flash to expose the intricate detail.

The USS Midway CV 41 saw no action in WW II, but was used in Korea, Viet Nam, and other actions.
