Vintage-furniture store owners renovate a midcentury home

Three years ago, Kylie and Ryan Durkin opened Modern Manor, a vintage-furniture store in Phoenix specializing in Midcentury Modern pieces.

So when the young couple decided to buy their first home last year, it’s not surprising which one they couldn’t pass up: a 1950 ranch with poured-concrete walls, exposed-beam ceilings and a groovy copper fireplace, in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix.

The Durkins, who first started collecting vintage furniture as a hobby, didn’t flinch at the fact that the home had been sitting empty for five years or that it had been on the market for a year and a half. Neighbors later told them it had long been the eyesore on the block.

“Every creature that crawls was in here,” Kylie, 26, says.

Still, they instantly knew the home, in near-original condition, was meant to be theirs.

Today, the house has been completely renovated. The Durkins — both of whom excel at design — drew out plans to modernize it while playing up its midcentury charm.

That's a pretty pricey "eyesore" LOL It's a pretty cool house now. But the colors are not what I remember from those 50's homes - hehe!

I like the re-purposing of many of their items. That always makes me happy! But, of course I would have liked to see more of that era's Glassware and Pottery! :)
