shadowboxes and vintage doilies

Hi,  I have a collection of vintage doilies and would like to use some of these in shadowboxes. they are just too beautiful to keep in a box anymore.  My mother was a great athlete and I have her medals for swimming and track and field that she won in 1932.  The medals are about 2" high.  I'd love to create a shadowbox using the doilies and medals - does anyone have any suggestions for doing this?  

I have framed one "placemat" that I made in grade school - probably grade 2 or 3.  It's a cross-stitch placemat and although I don't remember making it because it was a long time ago, my mom told me that I had brought it home from school and gave it to my dad.  Imagine my surprise when I was sorting through his desk after he died and I found the placement, a similar style bookmark and a round hotpad that was made from doing corking - my brother did that one.  I put these items in two separate picture frames and now they are "art" - at least I think so.  

I don't want to store the medals in a box in a drawer anymore - I would love to see them.  I have visited many sites but any suggestions would be so welcomed.  Thanks!  Barb
