I Antique Online

A Community For People Who Buy, Sell or Collect Antiques, Collectibles and Art

With Labor Day now come and gone, I added up my total for my estate sales this year. I've made around a fifth of what I did last year. It isn't for lack of shoppers, but they come, take a quick look and leave without buying. I don't know if it's because of the economy (they won't pay fair market value) or I just don't have what people want these days. Quiet a few asked for vintage Pyrex kitchen ware - that seems to be the "hot" thing around here; also "shabby chic" whatever that is. These are some photos of this weekend's sale.

Lillian, our sales are down as well from last year. eBay continues to be a nemesis as well as the economy. People selling good stuff for a dollar drives the value of vintage down. We have sold most of the Pyrex we had this year, so yes you are right it is hot right now. Shabby Chic I have no use for but people by anything labeled that, it's usually items for home decor that they can buy for a little of nothing. The flea markets and antique malls are full of it.

Hopefully if the right person wins the election and it wouldn't be Hillary [sorry], we can get the dismal economy turned around. Good luck with the rest of the year and if there is anything we can help with just shout. Indy

Some people have told me that unless I am willing to to an eBay-like business (pack and ship), don't expect to do very well (i.e. depending on people that just happen to be driving by and see the sale). We are now living in an Internet world and people are in buying online mode. Hardly anyone drives around to garage sales any more.

I can see a hundred, and then some, problems running a shipping business add to that the trouble of having to pack and ship. I like people to see and handle the merchandise, so if there is a problem, they can decide for themselves.

It is a different biz model. We used to have booths at multiple malls and have gone to online. Not feeBay, we have our own website. Your glass stuff is a bear to pack so that Cliff Claven the mailman doesn't bust it into a million pieces. Garage sales are still big here in southwest Ohio. Enjoy the holidays...
