Event Description

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – January 11, 2011 – Skinner, Inc. will host a Discovery auction on January 18th and 19th in its Marlborough gallery. Among the wide selection of material featured in this Discovery sale, bidders will find almost a hundred and fifty lots of Native American and ethnographic arts as well as at least two-hundred and fifty lots of 20th century design. There are numerous pieces of art pottery and glass from makers such as Rookwood, Moorcroft, and Steuben, as well as a number of Art Nouveau table lamps. Also offered will be mid-century modern furniture and works of art, a selection of Navajo rugs, Southwest pottery, African carvings, and a variety of basketry items. The sale provides an exciting selection of furnishings, decorative objects, artwork, rugs, and textiles for new and experienced collectors alike.

Pieces of note include an Alaskan twined basket (lot 555), a vase by Rookwood Pottery decorated by Lenore Asbury in 1922 (lot 804), a pair of white-painted wire and iron chairs from the Russell Woodard Sculptura series (lot 772), a custom modern dining table and benches (lot 686), and a 20th century Afshar rug from Southwest Persia (lot 807).

Skinner’s monthly Discovery auctions feature fine art finds for the ‘everyday’ collector. Recently recognized by Boston Magazine as ‘Best of Boston for antiques west of the city,’ the monthly sale allows buyers to discover and own collectible pieces of history.

The Skinner website provides full-color images and descriptions of each lot. For bidders unable to attend the auction, Skinner offers confidential absentee bids and real-time online bidding over the Internet with SkinnerLive!
