Anyone have any antique buttons?
My great grandmother had large tins of them, which I now have. I especially love the Victorian Mother of Pearl buttons.

Collecting buttons in the late 1800's was a favorite past time of young girls, they were called Button Strings.

The girls would collect and trade the buttons and string them. The idea was the first girl to collect 1,000 buttons on her string was said to be the first one to marry. Silly of course, but they had a lot of fun trying.

I took 100 of my grandmother's buttons and put them on twine. I display the button string when I go into the schools and libraries to present my Victorian children's program.

It took a while to string 100, I can't imagine doing 1,000!

It's a nice keepsake I have of my grandmother.
They always cut the buttons off everything my grandmother told me when the garment was no longer usable.
I'm so glad they did!
