This is a Hakone box made near Hakone, near Mt. Fuji, about an hour drive west of Tokyo! This appears to be taken at an antique flea market, most likely at Heiwajima Riutsu Center! The dealer is foreign but speaks good Japanese & he is showing how this particular money box works. There are 9 steps you must take to open the box. If you do not do it in the correct order the box cannot be opened without taking a hammer to it! LOL! He mentions the price at the end of 3,500 Yen, which is about $40. That is not too bad a price for this type of box as a lot of work goes into the wood inlaying patterns around all the sides. I have a Hakone rolltop box for sale on Bonanzle with this wood inlay technique if you care to take a look! They are truly works of art!
