Easter baskets are a tradition that most of us enjoy and those of us whose childhood is in the past, probably have a happy memory of a traditional Easter basket filled with goodies. I'm not suggesting that we abandon the children's Easter baskets, but since some of us like to create unique Easter displays, and since I'm an antique dealer and decorating enthustiast, I would like to suggest some alternative 'baskets' that can be used for a more unique looking arrangement!
One possibility is to use an early wood band box or pantry box such as the one shown in the above photo. If you happen to be fortunate enough to have one with early paint...that would be even better. Another idea is look around the kitchenware section of your favorite antique shop....where you can find a variety of possibilities, such as wire baskets, granite or tin collanders, tinware, a pastel bowl, a yelloware mixing bowl, an old mottled ironstone bowl, a wood bowl or graniteware basin would be also be good choices. Step out of the kitchenware section, and you can find some wonderful and charming old boxes that could be used with straw and eggs, or how about a straw hat filled with spanish moss for easter grass (a flat top hat such as a boater hat would make a terrific basket). Then, take a look in the garden section where you can find some nice vintage planters, a wood bucket or tin pail. Once you begin to think about it, the list of possibilities grows longer.
Without throwing out the traditional basket idea altogether, I hope my suggestions will get you to think about some different types of Easter 'basket' arrangements that you can create this year. Have a happy Easter everyone!
