I Antique Online

A Community For People Who Buy, Sell or Collect Antiques, Collectibles and Art

This past weekend, I reserved a table at a Ladies Retreat in Estes Park, Colorado and displayed my Vintage Jewelry. It was my first marketplace experience and it was so fun! And I sold quite a bit too.

Even though I love vintage selling online at Grandma's Treasures Online, I now have the itch to additionally take some of my products out where the people are. I noticed that many of those who stopped by my table began reminiscing about grandma’s screw-back earrings or a retro pair that was similar to what they wore in high school. Just holding them and sharing their memories, prompted many a sale. Others bought the jewelry as unique gifts to take home to a special friend or relative.

As part of my signage, I inserted a photo of myself at the age of three into a vintage reproduction frame. It was quite appropriate - since I am vintage too! ;-)

So, tell me about your experiences in marketplace buying or selling!

Actually, I mispoke! This wasn't the same show that I'm doing again. The one I'm getting ready for now is in my own little

town of Meeker.

I'm getting ready for this same show again but my advantage is that I am a member of the group who puts the show on so I get free booth rental. I made good sales last year but I really felt it was also important just to introduce myself and get my cards out there. I'm adding some homemade soaps and sugar scrubs to my vintage displays and scheming today on how I will display them. I just sold my vintage pitcher and bowl set so I'll be looking for other vintage bath aids to make my new stuff pop in the midst of the rest. You are right D'Anne, about the different groups and what they say though!

I have only set up booths at a couple local events and have been very disappointed in the sales - although the conversations were fun. Most of the other items at these events were new and many artisan. It seemed as if the younger gals wanted the artisan products (which were lovely) and the "middle age" gals would say "that reminds me of the stuff my mother used to wear" and walked on by. The "vintage" gals would tell me that they already had so much of that, did I want to buy some? It costs to rent a booth, and there you are for a long day. It seems to me the right venue is so critical, so I will read with interest which venues others found successful. What about the bridal shows, the antique shows? Thanks for sharing.

l love the the energy of a local marketplace but they take up too much of my Sat or Sun time away from my family. When I do a show, I always try to talk to others that have attended or attend it myself first. I think you have to be careful not to attend shows that aren't the right demographic for you or aren't well organized or promoted. Love your idea of the old picture for your display. I always take my vintage Pfaff for display. It's such a great conversation piece and it gets people even more excited about my work. Estes Park is so close and the drive up the canyon is so beautiful. Maybe we could share a booth sometime. I think we'd be a good fit for one another. Let me know, if you're ever interested.
