One of the things I love most about Connecticut’s Shoreline towns is the pervasive sense of history. Town Greens, charming Main Streets and antique homes draw me to visit.
My love affair with antique homes began in New Hampshire in the 1980s. I had never been in an antique colonial until I went on a house tour. It was so easy to imagine women cooking in the huge fireplaces and baking bread in the beehive ovens, with little ones tugging on their voluminous dresses. (What I didn’t want to picture was women having babies in the tiny, barren birthing rooms.)
Looking at wide-board floors indicate just how large first-growth trees must have been. Every single thing was made by hand, right down to the door hinges. Can you even imagine trying to build a house like this today?
If you’ve never been inside a historic home, jump at the next chance you get. You may fall in love, or you may think “old-house people” are nuts. When I see crooked doors and slanting floors, I swoon. Others can’t fathom why we covet these imperfections.
