Could Failing Manufacturers Boost Sales in Antiques and Collectibles?

How many of you received this update this week from Replacements, Ltd.?

"....Based on the calls we are receiving, you have probably seen in the news that there has been recent turmoil in the tableware industry, with many famous brands filing in bankruptcy or operating in insolvency, including divisions of Waterford Wedgwood, Johnson Brothers, Franciscan, Royal Doulton, Royal Albert, Rosenthal, Hutschenreuther, Tirschenreuth, Lenox, Dansk, Gorham Stainless, Royal Worcester, and Spode. You may have also heard that Lenox is closing a select number of their outlets, Oneida the majority of theirs, and Fitz & Floyd and Pfaltzgraff all of theirs..."

If all these companies go away, would not their product instantly gain in market demand? And if those of us who have some of their vintage pieces are in a position to meet that demand, should it not escalate our sales? Just thinking about my Franciscan Pottery that I just discussed in the Pottery Group. It may get real desirable, real quick.

Your thoughts?

Yes, Waterford Crystal is included in this. However, bankruptcy does not necessarily mean oblivion - there are still several ways these brands can keep going. First, they could come out of bankruptcy once their problems are resolved. Second, they could be purchased out of bankruptcy the way that Wedgwood has already been at least once. Seems to me that at least some of these brands are worth salvaging. Wedgwood, Waterford, Lenox all are excellent brands and are likely targets for acquisition by someone.

Even if they do go away, I do not expect to see our sales take off - the current economic environment is going to counteract any gains we might have had from their misfortune.
