Fontaine's Auction Gallery’s Civil War Auction on August 15, 2009 in Pittsfield, MA.
Richard Jordan Gatling (1818-1903) was an American born inventor from North Carolina; in 1861 he patented the first Gatling gun. In 1862 he founded the Gatling Gun Company. His intentions were to invent a gun that could do the work of several men, therefore lowering the number of men who would have to be on the battlefield. The US Military didn’t officially purchase Gatling Guns until 1866, though it was used in the field prior to then. Richard Gatling began selling his patents to Colt in 1870, he still remained the president of the Gatling Co, until 1897 when the company was completely taken over by Colt.
Quite a number of the 1883 Model Gatling Guns were purchased by the US government. The US Navy found that the protective bronze jacket of this model made it especially well adapted to sea duty. It was also used in the Spanish American War and the government of Canada also purchased several of this model and used them during the Riel Rebellion of 1855. The Gatling Gun revolutionized warfare.
This particular Gatling gun is one of the 1883 patent through Colt. It has 10 rotating .45 caliber barrels fully encased in a bronze jacket. Multiple barrels allowed for each to cool down between shots. The side mounted hand crank allows a firing rate over 600 rounds per minute, some models featured a rear-mounted crank which had a higher firing rate. The cartriges are contained in a flat donut-shaped “Accles” mechanical drum feeder, mounted on top, which was developed for this gun and the cartridges are gravity fed into the chamber. It is signed “Gatling Gun Patented – 1883 – No 358 – Cal .45”. The gun is mounted to a heavy steel army carriage and complete with ammunition boxes mounted on the sides. It is in fully working condition and has been fired at showings at The Eastover Resort in Lenox, MA. The Gatling gun, along with one of the largest private museum collections known in the country, will be sold (unreserved) at Fontaine's Auction Gallery’s Civil War Auction on August 15, 2009 in Pittsfield, MA. The sale with include the Eastover estate (cannons, uniforms, guns, swords and much more) as well as additions from many other private war collections. Over 500 lots will be sold.
