A Community For People Who Buy, Sell or Collect Antiques, Collectibles and Art
Tag sales, what once were just upscale indoor garage sales, has become an easy scam for dubious quasi-antiques and collectibles dealers. I have seen a slew of new tag sale companies pop-up the last couple of years, and many (if not all) appear to be run by the very dealers who would frequent my own tag sales. Not that I begrudge anyone in the resale business the opportunity to earn a living, in fact the tag sale business depends on these entrepreneurs. What concerns me is that the homeowner/client is expecting a fair market value for their items. Do I believe that a dealer turned tag sale planner has in mind the best interest of their homeowner/client - absolutely not! More often than not I hear of the duplicity of tag sale planners who offer merchandise at double its market value then buy it all at a fraction of its price when it doesn't sell. Sometimes they just take it away for "free" when they do a "clean-out' of the house.
My one word of advice for people who are considering hiring an estate or tag sale planner is simply - references!
