I Antique Online

A Community For People Who Buy, Sell or Collect Antiques, Collectibles and Art

The other day, a customer asked me if investing in antiques today is a good investment for the future. I answered that antiques values today is "any price you can get for it" and that "prices are genuinely down". Maybe soon they will rise. This is not a good answer -- especially for someone who is trying to sell something. I need to have a better answer and perhaps someone on this site has a more positive spin.

Thinking about this more - I should have answered that : vintage hunting and fishing collectibles, primitive kitchen and tools, and vintage sports items are still hot and can demand a good price. Specialty glassware such as Lotton and other art glass, Staffordshire, and some sterling silver specialty pieces (at the right price) are still good investment. Any other ideas please.

Did you ever get a unwanted sales call - they have an answer for everything because they work from a script and are prepared for most questions. I need to be prepared for the next time someone asks "Are Antiques a good investment?".

I want to correct a statement in my respose to the question of investing in antiques.
In my last line i wish to add the word "not" to the statement.
in other words. If you need think you may need the money real soon, then you should not choose to buy the antique item.

Hi. Your question may register to some people who are just getting started in collecting as asking them if they believe that you can easily go from bad to worse by investing in antiques.
The truth is, Antiques selected in the right manner and purchased with the proper goals in mind will always pay off in the long run.
If you want quick turnaround in profit, you had best not buy anything that you can stand to own for a long time if necessary to aquire a good profit.

Here is a interesting Article on buying antiques in a down market.

I may use some of this information to write up an article for our newspaper to print.

Sorry, I meant Dave. Vince, I agree with you too, though.

I have to agree with Vince. Now is the time to buy - not sell - antiques. Will the prices come back up? While I am not a prognosticator of antique value, especially now, but assuming the economy rebounds at some time in the future my answer is a resounding YES. Will the economy rebound? Your guess is as good as mine.

Vince, Green Spot Antiques

I very much like your trade in policy. At my business we do not have a trade in policy but we are one of the few business that have a "14 day same condition return policy" (does not include clocks) that demonstrates we have faith in our merchandise.

Now is the time to buy real estate because it most certainly will rise. The same can be said for antiques as the price is low. In the future I might say - there is no better time to buy while the prices are still low.

I have been looking at your web and business. You are probably successful because you are "Active" and doing something to sell or buy every day. Look forward to following your comments in the future.

Kind Regards
Dave
