For Wayne Burgess, the chief designer of the 2012 Jaguar XF, which was unveiled at the recent New York International Auto Show, the E-Type was an inspiration. “Probably more than any other car, it is a piece of sculpture,” he said. “It kind of transcends automotive design.”
Mr. Burgess, 41, grew up in Stoke-on-Trent, England, and has been drawing cars for as long as he can remember — starting “at 3 or 4,” he said. “I adored Jaguar.”
A collector of vintage furnishings, he has long been enamored of other things from the 1960s as well. At his home in Coventry, England, he has a triptych by Roy Lichtenstein and Warhol-style portraits of his cats, as well as a groovy Ball Chair by Eero Aarnio.
“I love the whole Pop Art culture movement,” he said. “The ’60s was a very strong period for design.”
Mr. Burgess took advantage of a break during the auto show to look for ’60s design in Manhattan. His first stop was Mantiques Modern in Chelsea, where he was excited by many of the vintage pieces, especially the pair of seats from a Fiat 124 Spider — a sports car he used to own — which had been repurposed as lounge furniture for a Fiat showroom in Paris.
