What's in a name?

Why is it a SOFA in the store, a COUCH while in your home, then it becomes a SOFA again when you're trying to sell it?

Glass Insulators a "hot" item again?

Well, just before Thanksgiving, Ginny (my wife) read this to me from one of the [seemingly hundreds of] "country" magazines she gets each month.

Insulators? They were pretty popular in the 70's... but so was digging up old outhouse pits in search of antique bottles. In the past 5 years, or so, I've seen hundreds of insulators go "no sale" at auctions and thrown into dumpsters without hesitation. This was a shame, I thought... I always liked insulators, I had a few that came… Continue

Shh... be vewwy, vewwy quiet.

I'm seeing customers.

This past weekend I was set up at the Tinnicum Antique Show. It seemed like we did far more in sales, and attendance was higher, than last year.

Well, between unloading the van on Monday, attending 2 auctions on Tuesday, and Jury Duty (Zzzzzz) yesterday, this morning was my first chance to sit down with the books.

Wowie zowie... sales nearly 3 times above last year.

Given the fact that the location was the same, the weather was close enough to being the… Continue

Recruiting

A few years prior to the U. S. Bicentennial I became involved with a group of Revolutionary War Reenactors. If you need a mental picture, think of those 'crazy' people who row George Washington across the Delaware River every Christmas eve. Those people, while very dedicated, are a losely knit group who only gather for that one event each year. While my group was together nearly every weekend of the year at some battle reenactment, a parade, a historical monument dedication, or manning an old… Continue

Random Thought 1a

I was set up at an antiques show recently. A lady, just slightly my senior, came in my booth with some pre-teen children. She was very drawn to our small display of old medicine tins. She was trying her best to drag the kids down "memory lane" along with her and they were simply not willing to go. She gave up finally, and just walked away. Even though that was a NO SALE for me, I felt bad for her. I got the feeling she was trying to instill a sense of history (and the value of it) to the… Continue

I feel like a bicycle...

"too tired". Okay, that joke works better when spoken. A bicycle is "two tired"... I know.

Renninger's Antiques Extravaganza in Kutztown, PA is the reason I'm so weary. The show ran April 22 (dealer set-up day, noon to dusk, no selling) and 23rd,24th,25th from 8am to 5pm.

Some dealers tend to make up their own hours. A few didn't arrive until 11am and several felt that 1pm wasn't too early to cover the tables and close up their booths. What's the harm, right? Who cares? ... you… Continue

I have a blog?

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it but I'll try this...

The New England Journal of Antiques magazine has, for some months, been trying to get some air under the "Antiques Are Green" movement.

This is, in a nutshell, an attempt to get younger people to look at antiques in a new way. They've even created a logo which is downloadable at

www.antiquesjournal.com

along with, I believe, an explaination of the entire premise.

I'm thinking this won't change the… Continue
