lighthouse oil lamp/boat

Very unusual antique silver plated nautical-theme oil lamp with lighthouse and ship in the middle, and a life preserver base. It measures 5" across, has a finger-grip handle (in the shape of a leaf), and has a letter "C" (or it may be just a decoration) embossed on both sides of both "hulls" of the "ship." The knobs on either side can be pulled out. One has some sort of a tong, like pincers, the other side is missing whatever would have been attached to it. The "lighthouse beacon" finial screws… Continue

The country life remembered

Once in a while I will happen upon something in a shop or at auction and when I see it, memories of my childhood appear as though a movie is being played in my head.

The old wood rolling pin brings a scene of my Mother rolling out pie dough for the pies she baked for an Inn that was popular and well known far from it's location. People from the D.C. area would visit the mountains where I lived and when here, they would eat at The Greystone Inn , which…

The Fine Line Between 'Vintage Picker With A Passion' or 'Vintage Hoarder'!

Collecting vintage and antiques can become very addictive! I'm a 'case in point'! It is a very fine line between a 'vintage picker' and a 'vintage hoarder'!

As I was watching an episode of the 'American Pickers', on the History channel, it showed a man who let Mike and Frank come to his place with the expectation to buy, and it was like 'prying teeth' for them to make any purchases. The man was asking very high retail prices for his antiques and vintage!

That show can be a great lesson… Continue

As time goes on , the era of heirlooms obsolete ?

Times are changing.
The computer, iphone, and whatever else everyone is carrying around these days has changed our society.
I am not talking doomsday like an old timer, I actually feel as though my computer is part of me, and I would not want to be without it.
Although I have embraced the computer age , I have also…

What are you looking for?

When I meet collectors of antique china as either a new or potential customer, they are eager to tell me what china pattern they collect or want to collect. But within that conversation is a second question -- what pieces are you looking for?

Many flow blue collectors have been collecting for years but are still searching for the elusive piece: the last four punch cups, a lid for a sugar bowl, a creamer, an under tray or under plate for a serving piece. Because the dinner, supper,… Continue

Antiques define style

As I browse through antique stores and visit friends' home where their prized antiques are displayed, I notice there are two obvious kinds of collectors:
1) People who collect a single style, theme, color or era.
2) People who are electic, sticking to none of the above and often not even the original use

I am definitely type number two. My very modern HD TV is sitting on an early 1800s Chinese Elm wood table that once had a lacquer finish, but now…

Come Join A Vintage Picker With A Passion On IAntiqueOnline.ning.com !

I am not a poet but a 'picker' be,

I cannot rhyme for the life of me,

But let an estate open it's doors,

Or a dusty garage lay the 'old' on it's floors,

And I will be scrounging around in a whirl,

The 'Vintage Picker' will run like a squirrel!

Enough said of my sad condition,

My own truly state of perdition,

I need your help in my eternal quest,

In seeking knowledge I will never rest,

So I join with friends at… Continue
