Is an Auction Result Determinant of an Items Value?

If at first you don’t succeed, try try again. This Grif Teller painting failed to bring even the minimum bid of $15,000 a few months ago at William Bunch Auctions. June 22nd it brought $61,000. This may put questions into the minds of consignors. Is the hammer price an actual estimate of an items value? Should consignors put… Continue

Lost may work. I'll definitely check out the Western Texas art. Are you familiar with Ralph Davison Miller? He is a painter whose work I enjoy. He painted in Texas at one point. Some of the tree paintings I have seen look as though they might depict Texas scenes.

Forestwood Antique Mall is next on my list!

Also I sent you an invitation to connect on LinkedIn. I notice you are connected to Kathleen Guzman. I met her at the Housing Works auction in New York... I recall she once worked at Heritage.

Actually, the place you mentioned in your post, Lost (and Found, the sister store next door) is probably your best bet for that. You might also try Forestwood Antique Mall at Forest & Inwood. I'm not familiar with the Dolly Johnson show, I'll check it out. Our upcoming Dallas auctions are Silver & Vertu (Mar. 31), Western & Texas Art (May 15), Decorative Arts & Design (May 26) and American & European Art (May 27). We'll have a Modern & Contemporary Art auction in early June (working out the date right now) and an Illustration Art auction at our new Beverly Hills office May 6.

Almost forgot to answer your question about Dallas antique shops & events! The Trinity area you mentioned on your site is probably the biggest concentration. Also called "The Design District," two big events here are Slocum Street Style (September) and Design on Dragon (November). The respective streets, lined with antique shops, art galleries and design showrooms, block off car traffic for a night and throw open their doors for the general public. Most serve refreshments, have contests, specials, etc. They're hugely popular, as they allow the public a chance to visit a lot of places that are to-the-trade only. The Uptown area is home to many antique dealers, and there is also a small concentration of them on Henderson Avenue. We (Heritage) often work with Brant Laird's Consignment Heaven over there--he's a good guy, we trade referrals with him often.

Hi Eric, welcome to Dallas! Was just checking out your post on the Trinity Antique District. That dealer's comment about Dallas buyers going for a look is true more often that we'd like to admit, and not just when it comes to antiques. You'll find that we are frequently characterized as being more about style than substance! I can't pinpoint the source of Dallasites' favoritism for European material, but it certainly fits with the popular architecture of the area--not too many Cape Cod saltboxes around here. When the wealthy build houses, Mediterranean villas and French chateaux are all the rage. The celebration and preservation of mid-century modern homes has only recently taken root here. Stop by our gallery when you get a chance, would love to meet you!
