FANS have been around since the beginning of time. By the 19th century, fans were manufactured in every country in the world as devices to stir the air as well as used in fashion. Novelty Hand Fans is the first book to take an in depth look at 19th…
I began collecting and researching hand fans in 1974, while on tour with an Actors Equity production of Noel Coward’s Bittersweet. In the production, my character held a prop fan and so my interest in fans began. After years of collecting, I became a founding member of FANA, Fan Association of North America, a not-for-profit educational and charitable organization with members united to promote hand fans as art and historical artifacts. I am a member of The Fan Circle International in the UK, the French Cercle de Ĺ Eventail and a life member of The Fan Museum in Greenwich, England as well as on the board of directors of the Hand Fan Museum in Healdsburg, CA, America’s only museum devoted to hand fans. I am also a member of the Costume Society of America of America as well as a member of the Ephemera Society of America. I conduct fan appraisals both in person as well as via the Internet. My personal collection varies from 18th century European fans to American 1950’s advertising fans. I maintain an educational not-for-profit web site called All About Hand Fans with Cynthia Fendel which can be found within my business web site, www.handfanpro.com. My Featured Fans page changes seasonally, allowing the www community to view fans from my collection. I share my collection via my programs, using a laptop PC and projector. I am one of the first in the antique world to use this technology, which allows the audience to enjoy a vast display of colorful fans along with a lively and entertaining narration. These well-received presentations include The Novelty of the Hand Fan, Fans of the Victorian Era, Advertising Hand Fans, Fans of Romance, Historical Hand Fans and Flowers That Bloom on Fans.
Hi Cynthia.
I have also admired hand fans for some time now. I had no idea there was any sort of club. That is great information to know and will look forward to spending more time reviewing everything.
