FLOUR TIP:  Take  a pinch of flour and rub on cast iron marks, or carvings of dark material to see if signatures appear. A lot of things can be read in that way.  Martin rubbed flour into his post on whatjafind and it makes the letters stand out so they can be photographed or read.

You can also use carbon dust (black) on white or light-colored objects.  I keep a pencil (carbon) and a nail file (dust) handy.
