Michael replied to Brent B.'s discussion Japanese Rowing Medal? in the group Whadja Find Today
"That's fine, I had a feeling that's what you meant but I just wanted to be sure... Incidentally, I did not join them together, I still had the fullstop in there. ;)"

"First line has a period at the end which ends that statement, then a double-space, and next line is a different thought. Joining them together as you did is a "misread" as you suggested. My 2nd line... ,so it's not.  (infers…"

Michael replied to Brent B.'s discussion Japanese Rowing Medal? in the group Whadja Find Today
"Hi Tom I may have misread you, when you said " Michael said it's written in Chinese. I don't see the 5 rings Olympic logo, so it's not."  You're not suggesting it's Japanese then are you? The writing is…"

tomsantiquesetcetera replied to Brent B.'s discussion Japanese Rowing Medal? in the group Whadja Find Today
"Michael said it's written in Chinese. I don't see the 5 rings Olympic logo, so it's not. I see an old style eyelet on top; newer ones have a horizontal slot for the ribbon. I see a wooden box w/o a latch or lock. I see a poorly cast…"

Michael replied to Brent B.'s discussion Japanese Rowing Medal? in the group Whadja Find Today
"Hi Brent The writing is Chinese. Though I cannot translate it fully, I do recognise some characters such as 造建艇新 means build a new boat and 紀 means discipline. Though translating it character by character is fraught with potential…"

Japanese Rowing Medal?

This one might be a challenge.  Anyone able to decipher how old this medal might be or what its origin might be?  Came in a wooden gift box, but the box is in pretty bad shape.  See More

tomsantiquesetcetera replied to Brent B.'s discussion Odd little brush in the group Whadja Find Today
"I think the brush is for a man's beard or mustache used to straighten the hairs similar to combing. The mirror shows him how it looks or where it needs to be brushed. The wooden case could be a prototype for a patent application, or a makeup…"

Brent B. replied to Brent B.'s discussion Odd little brush in the group Whadja Find Today
"No residue whatsoever, not even a hint of black on the bristles or the case.  So it could have been a never used shoe polishing brush.... The bristles are just coarse, like thick but very solid.  "

Michael replied to Brent B.'s discussion Odd little brush in the group Whadja Find Today
"I would think it is either a shoe polish device or, given you stated the bristles are very soft, a makeup item, although personally, I don't think it appears designed with the female market n mind looks-wise at the very least. Also, shoeshine…"

Brent B. replied to Brent B.'s discussion Odd little brush in the group Whadja Find Today
"The brush looks matted, but I think thats only from being slid into the holder over and over again, when you run your fingers across the bristles, they move around easily.  I thought maybe it was for spot shining shoes, but the small mirror…"

Fred Thompson replied to Brent B.'s discussion Odd little brush in the group Whadja Find Today
"I'm thinking a well done homemade thing, is the brush "caked" with black stuff? If it were meant to slip in a pocket I would expect it to be more rounded. ?????"
