"Blacksmiths made other stuff besides horseshoes. They made nails, knives and tools. The hole may have been for a back-stop. All the dents indicate heavy use, so I'd agree with you, probably a work station for making shoes, fastening rivets for…"

"Possibly. The hole is a bit irregular and measures 1/2" by 3/4" but is only 1/2" deep. I only know that the family owned a shoe company at one time. Not sure if they did any metal work or not. Interesting piece, worthy of more…"

"Thanks. I will check that out. The town I live in here in Penna. was founded in 1750, so I'm pretty sure it is a date. Not selling it. Thanks again for the info."

"I think you may have to go to WAGS. They are a cast iron club and some one  will know for sure on that site. My thoughts are the hole is for a handle to hold but for what reason, the 1775 may be a year. I wish I could find something like that.…"

"Found the above ptg sold for $80. Plus2 listed on eBay 1 at $900. and other at $99. neither one sold. Plus a private auction 1 sold for 28 Euros.  I think in a gallery the ship ptgs might sell somewhat higher."
