#New Haven, Conn., Yale, Book & Snake Hall, Postcard circa 1900

It's odd to see a cemetery featured on a postcard, but the photographer was just backing up far enough to get that small, columned, windowless building in the background into frame. Looking across Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven, Connecticut, the little building is Book and Snake Hall. If it looks familiar to you, it may be because it is the current Provost's office at Yale University. But around 1900 when this postcard was published, the building was known as "Cloister" or "Tomb"and was home to the secret society Book and Snake, also known by the Greek letters, Sigma Delta Chi. This small format postcard (3 1/2 x 5 1/2") was published by the Albertype Co., Brooklyn, N.Y.
