Antique Wholecloth Indigo Resist Quilt now on eBay, our oldest quilt.  The fabric in this quilt survives from c.1760, and originates, to the best of anyone's knowledge, from upper New York State or New England.  There is a similar quilt in the collection of the Rhode Island Historical Society.

Oh, that is a wonderful old quilt! Now, I think I would have known it had age, just by the look of the material.

And Thanks so much for the info and the blog - I signed up via email. Beautiful pics she has there too!

The fabrics on this quilt all date from pre 1850, except for the border, which was apparently added a decade or two later.

Another helpful book is Barbara Brackman's Clues in the Calico and anything else by her.   She also has a blog, Barbara Brackman's Material Culture, which is extremely informative.

Thank you for the tip! I will certainly look into getting that book. Do you have other's that you find very helpful to folks like me?

Vicki, in most cases, if you don't know the precise history of the quilt, and if there's no date on it, you have to judge by the newest fabric in it.  And it takes years of experience to know the ages of many of the fabrics, though good books, like Eileen Trestain's Dating Fabrics - a Color Guide can be very helpful.

Oh Sharon, Thanks for sharing all these lovely pieces! I have been trying to teach myself more on textiles etc, and am not doing very well - LOL

My expertise really lies in glass, pottery and jewelry, plus many oddities.

That being said, can you explain to us how you know it is an antique quilt? What are the identifiers? and also, is it American made or?

Thanks again for sharing all your wonderful knowledge!

The Pennsylvania Germans were always fond of bright colors...
