Hi, I have 3 little volunteer  pins.   Each has a different colored stone. The only picture to come out was the blue one. It is from one of our Nursing Homes.  I have no other history. Anyone want to take a stab at the price I could charge? Great condition but looks vintage.  Bernie

Hi Beth,

Bunches of THANKS for your reply.

You would know more about the crazing than I would. This type of thing isn't something I normally deal in. As for the holes, they are in the making for sure. They too, have glaze over craze. The rim is part of the piece. Wasn't an add on. I am confused with the metal. Outter and top edges of it, are consistant deep copper, almost with a bronze-e' appearance. The inner edge, has "remnants" of a brighter brass. Again, only remnants. And so as I study this more and more, under magnification, looking for possible markings, {which I seen none}, I'm thinking now, that this may be an oil lamp base? What do you think?

Drmpseyv- your remarks are encourage and I disagree - the crazing is deliberate - if it isn't then this piece was just a cheap piecem which I do not believe it is. The rim I bwliwvw is copper, but keep in mind that brass and copper are extremely close in content and in look. If your rim IS copper - it would be much ilder than I suggested. In addition, beides my comment on the top - there may have been a top piece or lid, which sat in the hole. From what I see - even if you sat the pics are deceiving - the crazing is deliberate. I am very comfortablr in the age - before 1840. I am comfortable with its purpose and I am close with its origin. My estimate based on this is you have a piece that could realize between 1000 and 350000 dollars - why the range and WHAT - there are many things going on that defy textbook descriptipn as well as the combo of mold and colors.

And, by the way - are you aware of a vase used as an umbrella stand - barely 12' TALL - BUT Was determined to be an important Chinese Dynasty piece? I won't go that far - but be asured - this is not RUN OF THE MILL BAKUSTER VASE AND PEOPLE OFTEN RUSHED TO HAVE ANY PIECE CONVERTED INTL A ELECTRICAL LAMP - i THINK SUCH WAS THE CASE WITH YOURS - CHECK OUT THE HOLES AND TELL ME WHAT YOU FEEL -

Hi Beth,

So MUCH THANKS for taking your time for me. Shows that your a "real" person. Very Far and FEW inbetween these days.

Anyhow, the images give an optical illusion. Kind of distorted too. There are 12 holes around the mid-base, all within the original making. Which threw me off from thinking a vase. The top rim is also part of the making. Though like you say, it does look more copper-ey than brass, but has some brass plate ? remnants or possibly a mix? either way, it's either.

Unfortunately, I just now noticed.... As usually happens AFTER the purchase, there is a line/crack. Still doesn't take away from the eye appeal.

Oh, and the crazing is age, and not intentional. High-lighted with gold trims. Then entire piece is textured or having raised flowers.

And that's the truth, the whole truth, and I think I'm stick'in to it. But not before I tell you again, THANK YOU Beth!

With what you've given already, I'll start researching for examples. If any.

Dempsey - I have been studying your vase - it is beautiful. I would call the form a "Baluster" vase and there would have been most likely two. It is not American and possibly English or Chinese but before the time when country of origin was mandated. The finish looks "Claire de Lune" Crackle Glaze which is why I suggest Chinese and while some pieces age to this - the workmanship appears deliberate. I can also see the age inside so this served some use. The holes have me puzzled because there are three on one side and two on the other. You said brass rim - did you do the brass test because it looks more coppery to me. I am really leaning more towards British. Another thought is that the holes may have been drilled out at a later date and this could have been a lamp - hence the metal top. Still, the vase has definite eye appeal and I would be able to tell more if I could handle it.

I too thought umbrella vase/stand, but, it's too small of a size.

It actually stands 12" high. Has a brass rim around top, of course, those holes around base. No markings that I can find. My second guess was some type of urn.... but, if so, then there must have been an insert of some kind?

Thank You for your guess Valerie

Hi Ralph,

To answer your question - I am also a generalist and I do research extensively as well as know my market. Many people are often desperate or needy to sell and do as you say - want top dollar.  I know what I can sell, and what simply does not turn. I personally feel it is unethical to purchase and instead, I advise them what the best price they may realize, suggest a venue for selling it, or on occasion offer to consign, but more often will send them to others I know buy - I have never lost

a customer and have repeat customers. When I do buy - I buy at auctions and occasionally a yard sale or several other dealers where I know I can find a diamond in the rough.
