Comment by Dempsey's CollectAbles on April 16, 2011 at 8:45pm Hi Beth,
Bunches of THANKS for your reply.
You would know more about the crazing than I would. This type of thing isn't something I normally deal in. As for the holes, they are in the making for sure. They too, have glaze over craze. The rim is part of the piece. Wasn't an add on. I am confused with the metal. Outter and top edges of it, are consistant deep copper, almost with a bronze-e' appearance. The inner edge, has "remnants" of a brighter brass. Again, only remnants. And so as I study this more and more, under magnification, looking for possible markings, {which I seen none}, I'm thinking now, that this may be an oil lamp base? What do you think?

Comment by Dempsey's CollectAbles on April 16, 2011 at 5:10pm Hi Beth,
So MUCH THANKS for taking your time for me. Shows that your a "real" person. Very Far and FEW inbetween these days.
Anyhow, the images give an optical illusion. Kind of distorted too. There are 12 holes around the mid-base, all within the original making. Which threw me off from thinking a vase. The top rim is also part of the making. Though like you say, it does look more copper-ey than brass, but has some brass plate ? remnants or possibly a mix? either way, it's either.
Unfortunately, I just now noticed.... As usually happens AFTER the purchase, there is a line/crack. Still doesn't take away from the eye appeal.
Oh, and the crazing is age, and not intentional. High-lighted with gold trims. Then entire piece is textured or having raised flowers.
And that's the truth, the whole truth, and I think I'm stick'in to it. But not before I tell you again, THANK YOU Beth!
With what you've given already, I'll start researching for examples. If any.

Comment by Dempsey's CollectAbles on April 14, 2011 at 7:45am I too thought umbrella vase/stand, but, it's too small of a size.
It actually stands 12" high. Has a brass rim around top, of course, those holes around base. No markings that I can find. My second guess was some type of urn.... but, if so, then there must have been an insert of some kind?
Thank You for your guess Valerie

Comment by Antiques in Bethania on April 13, 2011 at 1:10pm Hi Ralph,
To answer your question - I am also a generalist and I do research extensively as well as know my market. Many people are often desperate or needy to sell and do as you say - want top dollar. I know what I can sell, and what simply does not turn. I personally feel it is unethical to purchase and instead, I advise them what the best price they may realize, suggest a venue for selling it, or on occasion offer to consign, but more often will send them to others I know buy - I have never lost
a customer and have repeat customers. When I do buy - I buy at auctions and occasionally a yard sale or several other dealers where I know I can find a diamond in the rough.
