This wooden box (approx. 9 x 6 x 1.5 in.) has been in my family for a many years but no one knows how old it is or what its primary purpose was. We are not even sure whether it's hand-painted. Can anyone shed light? Many thanks.

My great grandmother had a box like this that was for storing the family Bible. I know many family bibles had their own boxes to protect them since they were the official birth, death, marriage records. Not sure that that is what it is or if that was hers original purpose but it looked like that.

Too small to be a bible box. Looks hand-painted, mid 20th century or so, and likely imported from some asian or possibly some eastern european country.

Hand painted lacquer?
