Can anyone share insight as to what the #12 on the side of this piece of stoneware pottery might represent ?

You don't give the measurements.  In the USA numbers represent number of gallons it holds. This is English so I'd guess it's for the number of liters it holds. I'm not familiar with the metric system but if you measure the radius and calculate the circumference then multiply it by the height you can then convert the answer to liters...I think??? Better ask Google.  Or if you have a measuring vessel for 1 or 2 liters count the number as you fill it with water.

Thanks for the input.

I post the measurements this evening

It measures 10" high by 7" wide.
