Hi, I was wondering if anyone may know the year this sterling silver purse was made. It has the butterfly hallmark inside the frame. The black on the frame may be enamel or black onyx. It has 13 real diamonds on the frame(it has been tested). Bek was from Germany and had his items sold in New York & Canada. I bought this last month at an estate auction for $60.00 Cdn. There were other German items at the auction such as hats which had the swastika symbol inside the hats printed on silk lining. Bek had made sterling purses on special occasions for the the Nazi Party/Nazi Sturmabteilung. Ernst Gideon Bek had a stroke in 1932 & he retired in 1934 when his sons took over the company. I am not sure of the value on this purse or it's possible association with the Nazi Party. Thanks for your help. Shelly
Nothing quite as ornate as yours, but this was on Etsy. Ebay had several similar bags, without the diamond embellishments from roughly $100-$350. There was no mention about the historical references.
Hi, Thanks for your information. I am guessing this may have been a special order/request as I have not found any chain mesh purses with diamonds. Thanks, Shelly
Hi Shelly, I believe your hand bag is from the Art Deco era, and perhaps a bit later. It's hard to tell from pics. That would be 1920's - 1930's. But, I have found similar bags, still with the very Art Deco geometric patterns as late as the 1950's. The fact that you have actual Diamonds should also be considered if you want to valuate your bag for insurance reasons? Because most similar "evening bags" you will find online are in silver plate with rhinestones.
It's a lovely bag, and what a good price too!
Hi Vicki, Thanks for your reply. When I bought this chain mesh purse it was black & I couldn't wait to clean it up(very gently of course). Even when it was dirty(patina) I loved it, the fact that it had diamonds made it more special. I guess that the auctioneers didn't expect there to be diamonds under all the built up dirt. I don't know what to value it at for insurance purposes. I was disappointed that I didn't get the winning bid on a bakelite necklace at the auction, this purse was an after thought. A satisfied customer indeed!!! Thanks, Shelly
