Antique milk strainer

Thanks  Is the purpose of straining the milk to separate the cream?  I did a quick google search and really didn't see any similar pieces, at least none with a spout.

It seems to me to be a way to pour the milk into more suitable containers quickly.  You can have it strained and then automatically pour it into a glass, rather than dumping the pail into another pail, etc.  I suppose it is a semi-educated guess.
