Do you empty the water from your snowdomes?

Been collecting snowdomes since the 1990s. I always retain the water in the domes, topping off when needed. However, a number of my snowdomes have deteriorated with age - the print on the inside panel has faded or the blue back is peeling, leaving blue flakes amid the snow. I am wondering if other collectors empty the water for preservation.

Hi Phillip, I had a similar problem a while back. It is a Christmas snow-dome that was a gift in the 80's I think. Mine Congealed into a "snot like" stuff - UGH - LOL

I'm pretty sure Andy posted recommended way to replace the water/snow in the "discussions" area of the page here.

I think he also has someone that can restore old Snow Domes as well. I'm sure he will comment when he has time.

In my opinion and in my experience...The answer is mostly up to the collector. As long as it is emptied early on and the snow dome is fresh and new like, it will not
affect it in any way at any later point when you decide to fill it for display.

The red ink is mostly affected buy sun light, but yes emptying the water may help. Good point.
Any really old snow domes with red lettering on the inside that already shows signs of the red letters fading
on the name plaques must be kept out of all lighted areas as well as sunlight as they indicate poor ink quality.

Peeling comes from extreme temperature changes. Attempt to keep in moderate temperature areas if possible.
