I Antique Online

A Community For People Who Buy, Sell or Collect Antiques, Collectibles and Art

Hi All - I had to join this group for my daughter's sake. For the last year and up until recently she's been reviewing one old cookbook a week and usually making a recipe from the book. We've both been avid cookbook collectors for years. My collection started with my Grandma's and Mom's books and went from there. She now has a lot of my old books and a fine collection of her own. I still think the best book we came across was the Jello cookbook. I remember when I was a girl they would put anything in jello. She didn't really believe me until we ran across the Spam in Jello recipes. And recently I found a Knox Gelatin "On Air Cookbook", presumably the recipes that were used on tv - I'm sure back in the mid to late 50's. My most recent old book is a mint, unread condition, Better Homes & Gardens Birthdays and Family Celebrations from 1963. Not an antique, but it's a good read. Anyway if you're interested check out my daughter's site. Along with her love of Bento, she's reviewed and used (or tried to use) cookbooks 50-100+ years old. In some cases the terminology proved to be a challenge and some results were less than stellar. On the right side menu, hit "Exploring Cookbooks". Quite a few interesting books there. http://piecesofearth.wordpress.com/

Colleen,

I think my nicest cookbook is a Jello one from the 20's or 30's. The illustrations are incredible, especially since they are only Jello recipes. Spam in Jello? UGH! What could be more awful? LOL
