First, the pipe; it is a circa 1920's (I think) bakelite tobacco pipe and the bowl of said pipe is figural of a black man. The word "Darkie" is embedded on one side of the bowl. There is a variation of this pipe that has a top hat and a photo frame on one side, but mine is not that model.
After endless internet searching for days and days, i still have more questions than answers. There are less than 1/2 a dozen pictures of the pipe on the web, despite the fact that many vietnam vets came home with one. (I gleaned this from many seperate sources like pieces of a puzzle) I THINK a company named Hilson (hillon and sons) are the makers but that's just based on one pik i saw and can no longer find. I want Facts! lol...I want to know things like the makers name and the year it came into being and the year the company folded and where they were located and stuff and such. But the mass of NO INFO on this pipe is making me even more determined to discover. LOL..
So. I put this challange to any and all brave enough to takle it....
I am new to Black Americana and even though something like a "Darkie" pipe is itself obscene, it's also a voice that speaks of history and i wunna hear it. So.
