Hello everyone and welcome to The Kingdom of Kitsch! I hope we develop interesting and lively discussions about anything involving the world of collecting Kitsch and what it means to the individual. I think there are many different aspects to collecting kitsch and the reasons behind it.
To some it reflects memories of growing up in an era of change and our parents wanting, but not being able to afford, the finer things. So "cheap" imitations of better goods that could be purchased easily at the dime store made it seem like we were better than we really were, in a way.
To others, and this is where I fit in, it represents an unusual way of looking at the world. I find the tasteless cartoon like design from back in the day to be hilarious and fun, even though it could be demeaning to women, minorities and just about everyone! I find it incredibly interesting that designers got away with the things that they did and people bought the stuff! The fact that what sold for .25 in 1955 now sells for $25 is also interesting.......
So join me in dialogues about anything you want regarding this fascinating subject and look for more uploads from my collection. Feel free to share your finds and treasures. The kitschier, the better!
