Dore bronze Tiffany clock with matching candelabra

DESCRIPTION: Dore bronze Tiffany clock with matching candelabras. Intricate gold gilded bronze cloca case with double lion heads, dragons, and ribbon design. The dial is solid bronze with inlaid wooden Roman numeral numbers. Original glass cover. The movement is marked "Tiffany and Comp New york" "172". Accented by two matching candelabras with similar design. All three pieces are footed with lion claws. Original pendulum and key. Phenomenal set

“The Jews Led in Captivity”.  Paris, 1800s

                Magnificent colored lithograph illustration of dramatic scene of captive Jewish men, women and children, along with their King Yehoyachin, being led by soldiers -- some astride elephants -- to exile in Babylonia as Nebuchadnezzar  supervises the procession.  At left Jewish captives  are shown being whipped as they carry the Menorah and the sacred vessels, and at rear the Jerusalem Temple appears in flames.  (II Kings: 24)

                There are printed captions in French and Spanish, and a hand-written inscription bemoaning the destruction of the Temple and the national tragedy of the Jewish people, signed in Hebrew and in Latin script ‘Yaya Ben Hamcus.”   13 X 16.5 inches  32 X 48.5 cm.

The Western Wall – Ca. Early-to-Mid-1800s

“Jews’ Place of Wailing.”  A fine, hand-colored steel engraving on paper of the Western Wall in Jerusalem by W.H. Bartlett ad E. Challis.  Men and women are portrayed as praying before the stones of the ancient Wall buttressing the Temple Mount.  London, ca. early- to mid-1800s.  8-1/4 X 7-1/2 inches.  21 X 19 cm 

The artist William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) was one of the foremost illustrators of his generation.  He traveled extensively, especially in the Middle East, where he executed a number of views in the Holy Land.

The Jewish Wedding – By Bernard Picart, 1722                 

Copperplate engraving - The “breaking of the glass,” highlight of the traditional Jewish wedding.  The bride, her mother and her new mother-in-law sit under a Huppah marriage canopy, with wedding guests watching and a group of wedding musicians play, as the groom, glass in hand, prepares to stomp on it to the cries of Mazal Tov, Good luck!  Captioned Ceremonie Nuptiale rite Portugaes, The Ritual Ceremony of the Portugese Jews.   Under the plate the engraver’s name “B. Picart,” and the date 1722.  From Picart’s Ceremonies and Customs of the Religions of the People of the World, Amsterdam, 1723.  6-1/4 X 8-1/4 inches  21 X 16 cm

Bernard Picart (1673-1733), the great French engraver and book illustrator, produced a series of important copperplate illustrations of Jewish ceremonies for his magnum opus, Ceremonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tout les Peuples Du Monde, one of which is “The Jewish Wedding – The Breaking of the Glass,” which became a classic.

N. Brenner, “18th Century Jewish Wedding.” 20th Century.

 

            Highly decorative,colorful etching after the 19th century painting by Moritz Oppenheim of a wedding in the courtyard of a synagogue, the bride and groom, bound together by a wedding belt, with a Tallit over their heads, standing under a Huppah marriage canopy surrounded by wedding guests, the rabbi, cup in hand facing them and reciting the blessings, while a musician plays on his violin and a wedding jester entertains the guests. 

 

            Signed in the plate “N. Brenner Vidai/SC”, and written below “Vidai Brenner Nandor.” 16 X 11-1/2 inches 39 X 29.5 cm
