Long before banks, ATMS and check-cashing services, there were pawn shops. Pawning was the leading form of consumer credit in the United States until the 1950s, and pawn shops are still helping everyday people make ends meet. Pawn Stars takes you inside the colorful world of the pawn business. At the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop on the outskirts of Las Vegas, three generations of the Harrison family--grandfather Richard, son Rick and grandson Corey--jointly run the family business, and there's clashing and camaraderie every step of the way. The three men use their sharp eyes and skills to assess the value of items from the commonplace to the truly historic, including a 16th-century samurai sword, a Super Bowl ring, a Picasso painting and a 17th-century stay of execution. It's up to them to determine what's real and what's fake, as they reveal the often surprising answer to the questions on everyone's mind, "What's the story behind it"? and "What's it worth?"

The shows are staged. My friend Jeff Pilard was the auctioneer on the show that had Chumley wanting to buy the Zoltar fortune teller machine. He said that they had fake bidders the day before the auction for the taping and then added the correct final price after the auction was over. Still it is a great show and the items are very interesting, my wife and I are both huge fans and watch every chance we can. We are big casino ship collectors and love it when they have items from the casino's that people bring in to sell or pawn.

What I like about this show is that Rick calls in the experts for appraisals, and the one time with the Spanish Gold Coin...instead of paying the man $2,000.00 that he asked for, Rick paid $11,000.00 after the expert appraised it for $18,000.00! For sure that family does not take advantage of people. They are honest about telling them what they can pay. :O)

Jim, that Chumley with Bob Dillon episode was staged, but it had to be, and it was cute!
Amy, did you see the one where he wasted time at the grandfather's house, when he was sent to pick up an item? He ate food out of the fridge! LOL :O)

Very entertaining show worth watching as some of the items which come in are things I have never seen or have seen and wish I had them. A good way to learn the art of negotiating prices, I cannot believe how low some of the people will sell their items for, they go in there because they need the money and will sell on the spot regardless of the low offer. If you like to see unusual rare items it is a fun show, different from the Antique Roadshow because it is really a "reality" tv show, howevefr seems to be staged a bit.

I LOVE this group! LOVE watching them, and seeing all the interesting things that come to them. Sometimes some good fakes/reproductions, and sometimes the real thing.....always something different to see, and amazed everytime too:)
