So i am leaving this group the reason being every single comment a person makes gets emailed to me, this means i need to erase a lot every day since i joined last night i have had nearly 100 emails.

Rick, you mention a printed survey. That is very good but I hope you also have a good size email list to mail your survey to? I know that I'm more likely to fill out an email survey than a printed one if it needs to be mailed by snailmail.

Saturday is a classic day to go to fleamarkets most places. With many fleamarkets open on Saturdays it sometimes becomes a choice as to which one to pick both for shopping and selling, can't do them all. Here the Waldo Market (farmers and fleamarket) is the closest, at approx. 22 mi from me. Saturday most quality and volume dealers set up in Gainesville which is farther away (from me) so I don't visit it. On Sundays many of the same dealers set up at Waldo so I pick Sunday to go there. What do I buy? Well, tempt me! I do look for certain items at times but it's the surprise items I find that makes it the most fun to go even when I don't locate what I came for!

Howdy, everybody!

Thanks for the comments so far. These are a big help!

Out here people set up more on Saturdays than any other day. The next would be Friday and rarely Sunday. Up in New England it was always on Sunday.

How far one would travel is a great question, and one that is on my printed survey. I have been on the national circuit myself so I have traveled hundreds of miles between markets, though locally I usually went 70 miles to set up in an appropriate market for my goods. I just cannot do this anymore. Way too much work and I am now too disabled to put in that much work, and if you have ever set up, you know it is a lot of work!

What sort of things do you look for when going to a flea market? There are different kinds of markets such as those who cater to general merchandise, some that cater to more antiques, some to art... Mine is a mix, though the permanent market will be divided to separate the general from the more upscale because of the types of vendors out here and on the circuits. Some will only set up in antique markets while others general or do not care. The different markets do tend to draw different customers.

#1 when ever the weather is nice and there around we will go to them, its a good passtime.

#2 ..If the weather is nice, I like an outside booth, and most of them up here, except summer are inside. Will set up to sell twice a month in the summer.

#3 we go to antique mall/flea markets at least twice a wk.

We dont have the same weather as you guys

Hope that helped.

Applause to Rick Murray for his entrepreneurship! And thanks for letting us all know WHERE it's located. A little out of my way from No. FL, regrettably. On that note, here are more questions for your survey:

How far would you travel to visit a flea market to a/ shop, b/ set up?

My A: 20-25 miles if the market is large and popular, 10 miles or less if a smaller, less attended market.

MY B: Same answer. I'd be less likely to set up at a smaller market, however, regardless of distance. Not much point.

What are your criteria for a flea market for you to a/ shop, b/set up?

My A and B: About the same as above. Plus I select the good market days when the fleamarket is the busiest with most vendors. Example: If few vendors on Saturdays because most vendors are doing other markets,  I'd go on Sundays when they are in attendance at my closest larger market. And the space rental would have to be advantageous. A discount for more than 1 day is nice. Another discount for monthly, etc. is also recommended.

Answers to your other questions:

1, How often..  About once a month. In "season" perhaps twice. Or when I am actively searching for something in particular.

2. Likely to go.. Probably next weekend and/or the next. It's Spring when the markets here come alive (Florida). In summer they die down as dealers go north with their wares then.

3. Likely to set up.. Not applicable for me any longer. Used to set up once a month when I had merchandise.

To bear in mind: The ebb and flow of your local market, the days people are likely to set up and to shop, the time of the year, the distances to the nearest most inhabited areas, etc. Experience over time will tell you.
