This is a japanese hand painted lusterware coffee set in green and orange, with handles in gold but only on one side, and with a bird in a branch painted in each piece. As you can see in the first photo every piece of the set is marked in japanese characters "dai nippon" which means "great Japan". I have read in this page: "http://gotheborg.com/marks/20thcenturyjapan.shtml" That all marks including hand painted japanese characters "dai nippon" belong to the Meiji period (1868-1912). But I have allso read somewhere else that japanese lusterware was made essentially from the thirties to the fifties.
Well, having that said. What do you think about my coffee set, Is it Meiji or early showa?

I think it is Showa, and maybe not so early. I think it is from the 1930s.

Thank you very much for your answer. I value your expert opinion.
1868-1912 was the Meiji period as you state, however dai Nippon, The Great Japanese Empire is what you are talking about. It began in 1868 but went to 1947 when the New Japan began. Also as stated, lusterware was made in the 1930s-1950s which is closer to your date.
Thank you very much for your clarification.
