Hi everyone! I am new to the antiquing world and just purchased a beautiful tall table lamp. I am deciding what to do with it. I'm wondering, was this a vase made into a lamp? This is the marking on the side of the vase. There was an actual sticker on the base of the lamp that says Fujita Kutani Lamp No. A - 2129. Regardless, it was a steal and georgous:-).. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Could you post a photo of the lamp itself?
Thanks so much, Carole for reaching out and any help you may offer:-). Attached are more pictures.
Does the little, round sticker say Made in Japan?
Yes, it does:-)
I don't think it's pre-1921 Kutani ware, but I don't think it's late 20th Century because by the late 1980's the ceramics factories in Japan had largely moved to other countries. I'm guessing it's circa 1970's-80's. It is very nice. Most vases meant to become lamps had a "dimple" in the bottom that could be poked out for the electrical cord.
Thanks so much, Carole! As a newbie, I really appreciate the help! Would you list it at $250-$300?
In your picture showing the mark, the first character, a cross within a circle, is the family crest for the Shimazu family who ruled Satsuma Pottery.
The porcelain part of the lamp was made by Satsuma and the lamp was assembled by Fujita. My guess is that the porcelain part was made specifically for the lamp and probably within the past 50 years.
The color of the cross in a circle is gold which is the current color in use. Previously they have been red and blue, each color denoting a time period.
Regarding your price, usually table lamps come in pairs. As a single I'd lower the price to $100-200. (My opinion). If you had a pair then $500-600 would be close.
