This chromo-lithograph appeared in a private club newsletter known as "Bennett's Mansion House" July 26, 1879. It was cut out and glued to stiff cardboard. (I framed it). It shows the departure of the converted-to-steam schooner USS JEANNETTE, a US Navy ship on an extended voyage to find the "Northwest Passage to India" from San Francisco Bay by the San Francisco Yacht Club. The ship became frozen in the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia two years later. It sank. Two thirds of the crew perished due to harsh conditions and lack of supplies. Fort Alcatraz island can be seen in the background. From an etching by "special artist" (H.A. Ogden). Bennett was a millionaire playboy, owner of a NYC newspaper who personally funded the operation. Asking $5,000. (I accept PayPal), OBO; e-mail me at thundhausen@hotmail.com if interested. There are 30+ boats or ships. The white clouds on the water are from signal cannons. It measures 14.5" x 5.75".
