Timesavers Estate Sales,

Off topic but the hat pins and holders at your sale are just amazing!

People try to return things all the time at our estate sales....we have huge signs saying All Sale Final and our terms and conditions on estatesales.net (which all the companies use) clearly state all sales final, no returns, inspect merchandise before purchasing, yada, yada....we also have a big sign out on the front door of each sale with all the terms and conditions...no one ever reads the signs, they just don't. When someone comes up to the cashier trying to bring something back, I point to the sign behind me prominently displayed and they look at me like I am crazy and say they never saw the sign. oh well.....

As for Diane's request of posting of an estate sale, I will have to do my own for this weekend :)

The listing and pictures are not complete, as we are still setting up and will have more pictures also....we had to change from a two part sale to a one part three day sale...and we are scrambling!

Have you ever had anyone return something? Years ago, at a yard sale, I was selling semiprecious stone earrings with surgical steel posts for $2 a pair. A woman bought them, knowing full well what they were, then rang my doorbell two days after the sale and asked for her money back. I gave her the two bucks, and told her never to come to one of my sales again.

Then, there were the people fighting over a shirt my friend was selling; we hadn't even opened yet, but the two women got a hold of the shirt and started tugging until my husband broke it up.

Do you get advance buyers? We haven't put our address in an ad for years, but, once, a yard sale regular showed up at my door the day the paper came out even though the address wasn't listed; told me she was going to be away on Sunday so could she see the stuff now; told her no; no surprise that she showed up on Sunday.

In a more humorous vein, we once had a hearse stop, and the chief mourner get out to ask if we were selling military memorabilia; we weren't, so he drove off; always wondered if he was on his way to the funeral or on his way back.

LOL - that is a good idea Charles - except the "kids" in this case were teenagers - ugg x 10!

I also encounter the customers that treat you like an ATM machine. They pick out a 25 cent items and hand you a $100 bill and expect you'll make change. Why do people carry such large bills when going to garage sales? They could get smaller bills when they go to the bank.

Wow, Lillian thanks for sharing those rather amazing and amusing stories of the weird and tricky humans you've encountered - I was particularly struck by the one about the woman who tried to walk off with some things, giving you that lame excuse. Wonder how she'd feel if you tried that with the lawn furniture, etc she has "just sitting out there" at her house.

Vicki, I couldn't agree with you more regarding the "My eBay" page. There are 2 tools that I use that wanted to share with you: one is a free eBay sellers tool app that gives you a much better view, it's called "Selling Manager" (http://pages.ebay.com/selling_manager/). As long as you don't go Pro, it's free. I've found the dashboard to be almost addicting. LOL. The other tool I couldn't do without is the eBay Sidebar plug-in for Firefox. If you don't already use Firefox, it's worth installing just for this app - no kidding! With the click of a buttonm it opens a little sidebar, and you just hover your mouse over an active item and it displays number of page views, watchers, bids. . . it has options to have pop-up alerts when someting happens on your auctions. I luv it! http://myebayfox.com/

Hope they help you as much as they do me!

Lillian  - good post. After conducting estate sales for over ten years, I have seen all these "types" except for the drive by....we are inside and don't care about those......I could list probably at least ten more "types" including the thief (we call the police), the one who screams and causes so much commotion (arguing with us over price or some other crazy thing) and we have to ask them to leave, they claim they "don't have to"and we call the police....and my favorite the one whose total rings up to $21and they say "I only have $20 dollars"......well if it was only once a rare while that this happened, I would do it, but I kindly have to explain to them that this happens numerous times during every sale day and if I let everyone go for that "$1,$2 or $10 - yes they ask for 10 off) multiple that by the number of people that ask me to do that and I am cheating my client out of a lot of money......they look at me like I am talking a foreign language, still whining, while I tell them they have to put one of their treasures back.....almost invariably, they miraculously "find" more money in their purse/pocket and buy the item!
