Swastikas were also used by some Native American Tribes (Plains tribes and possibly others) as good-luck symbols. Many US items, including tape measures, quilts, and decorative items from the 1900s -1930s were decorated with swastikas. I have heard than the Native American swastikas are mirror images of the Nazi swastika (i.e. face the opposite direction), but being dyslexic, I cannot vouch that that is true.
Shari..this is how you would list the button..brass with japanned back, self shank. When you say magnetic would the magnet pick up the button and hold it?

I LOVE BUTTONS!
Comment by Veronica L Pruitt on March 3, 2012 at 10:28am Hi all,
The Swaztika was borrowed by the Nazi party from the ancient
Chinese symbol for good luck, prosperity, and long life. The Nazi connecttion is one that sticks in the public's mind.
Peg, I am confused. I thought you said it was called japanned on the back and that would not be magnetic but it is magnetic on the back and it is also called japanned? I don't do ebay but might try etsy someday. I have so much of so many different collectables that the thought of getting things set up to sell is overwhelming. It will probably go back in my little glass chicken and stay there. I do really appreciate all the help you have given me. I love this website and Dianne and a few others and now you have been so very helpful. WOW, 25 years is amazing. Do you have a website that shows off your collection? My girls sorted through my buttons and took all the unusual ones or animal ones and made rings or scrapbooked with them. At least they are loved and used and not stuck in my glass chicken. :o)
well I've been a button collector for well over 25 years now and have seen thousand of this button construction..the button is brass the back is tinned with what used to be covered with black lacquer which we in the button world call a japanned back.
if your thinking of selling it on ebay you can't use the word swastika but can list it as flyfot
good luck
Peg, the back is different metal than the sides and the front and the back is magnetic. I think maybe the sides and front are brass. They are a gold color anyway. I have searched and searched about this button and your information is the only info I have found. I think I might sell it but I want to have as much info/history as I can before I do. Again, thanks so much.
don't clean it..the back isn't steel its brass..steel will "stick" to a magnet..no it isn't a uniform button
I have not tried to clean it and have preferred not to touch it. LOL From the magnifying glass the red has a pattern and appears to be fabric? It is not paint. So I should not try and clean it? My husband says the back looks like steel. Do you think it is from a german uniform or something else?
