Thank you, David Liche, for this information! When I first got this lamp I remember reading up on it and did see that it was probably made in China. Because of its attached base in black wood no makers' stamps can be seen, nor is there a maker's mark elsewhere on the lamp either.
When I lived in New York City in the 1960s Oriental imports shops were numerous, especially on Broadway and around Times Square, all trying to get as much of the visitor trade as they could.
When shopping in the area I used to stop and look in those shop windows. It boggled my mind that so much brand-new and very beautiful oriental ware was there, tightly displayed from huge vases, urns, to cups, saucers, tea pots, bowls, plates, also rugs, embroidered table cloths, napkins, even shawls, scarves, blouses, dresses! I recall seeing lamps and vases with the Geisha Girls in boats too! Perhaps my lamp was once in one of those shops, who knows? All I know is that I found mine at a price I could live with and that after rewiring and a new shade it replaced a very ugly black lamp, thus served my purpose extremely well!
I didn't mean there is something wrong about chinese ceramics and other oriental import items, they can be as beautiful as your lamp is. The point is to pay a fair price (as in your case) and don't get fooled by ignorant or malicious dealers who pretend their items are antique and very pricey.
Sorry if It seemed like I was criticizing the lamp, it's maybe because I'm from Spain and English is not my native language.
