Meet Marisa Scheinfeld: Catskill Mountain Photographer-Videographer
In Marisa's words about her project:
"I grew up in “the mountains” or as others called it “the country,” as if no other mountain or country existed. For a time and for a great number of people, this declaration had a certain truth. Known as Sullivan County and located about ninety miles northwest of New York City, from the 1920s through the 1970s these mountains were a retreat for millions of Americans, predominantly Jewish-Americans. The area, in close proximity to the city, was first developed in the late 1800s with thriving industries tanneries, lumberyards and farms. The farms became boarding houses and eventually grew into hotels. From these foundations, a tourist region was born. In the first half of the 20th century Jews were banned at most resorts in the United States, thus the construction of a haven of their own. Although built on traditions from their European backgrounds the resorts were also an expression of a contemporary desire for assimilation."
