So, there are some very fine mantels out there, and I am dead set on replacing the five plain ones in my 1910 neo-classic/southern colonial cottage, but sizing them is a pain. 

Does anyone know of any resource about sizing mantels appropriately? I mean like shelf and mantel face width vs. chimney width, mantel vs. room size or ceiling height, etc.? Sometimes it's obvious, but sometimes not. Like, I'm not sure if a 63"w mantel will look OK on a 50"w chimney. The current one is 56.5"w.

A lot of this is  Everything that's out there today about this suggests really out-of-scale do-whatever-you-want type mentality and is tasteless in my opinion.
