About Your Moderator Charles Elliott

I work with furniture repair and restoration, specifically all types of seat weaving and woven furniture restoration. I have worked with wicker (round, flat oval and half round), willow, banana leaf, seagrass, caning, split ash and oak, flat reed and fiber rush. I have gotten some unusual projects in the past couple of years as I have gotten more into the wicker and willow. I have taught caning, fiber rush, and flat reed seatweaving in the Erie, PA region for 12 years. Since I work with rattan materials for much of the seat work I do, I also use the materials to make baskets, including Nantucket Lightship style baskets. I would be pleased to help maintain the forum and share thoughts, resources, and insights to collectors, historians, and weavers on wicker history, research, design, restoration, and collecting. Greetings Wicker Enthusiasts,

I look forward to hearing more about the myriad of wicker furnishings, baskets, and home decor items found along the trails and digs of collectors around the country.   Wicker furniture is an American inspired product.  Using materials left on the docks in the harbors of the northeast United States, creative furniture makers fashioned the first wicker furniture pieces.  These enterprising designers and craftsmen continue to bear their names on some of the most prestigious and sought-after wicker artifacts today.   Heywood and Wakefield started making wicker furniture as independent companies in the 1800's, merging in 1897 to become the Heywood-Wakefield Furniture Company.  The beginning of quality wicker furniture got it's start right here in the United States.   I am proud to share the story with others as I collect and restore wicker furniture and decor.

If you are in need of a moderator, I would be willing.  I repair and restore wicker, rattan, and willow furnishings so I have an interest in learning more.
