Comment by Beth Liles on October 24, 2011 at 4:07am I have often wondered about those types of tactics. Perhaps I'm pessimistic, but I think I'd be more surprised if things like that didn't happen. Anyway, all is well on this item. It was on eBay and no one ever bid against me, so I got it for $25. I think it's cute, so I'm happy with it. Thanks again for your advice and information!
Comment by Antiques in Bethania on October 23, 2011 at 10:26pm Just be cautious - I could not believe my ears when walking into a junk store where there were a bunch of men talking about an item that was on sale on the internet, and one guy - who obviously it belonged too said - I'm not worried because I have a string of people to boost up the price! Now I have seen these guys at auctions but they didn't recognize me and I have always suspected their tactics.
Just don't get caught in a final bidding frenzy and set your limit. The seller may come back to you and offer it to you.

Comment by Antiques in Bethania on October 23, 2011 at 8:03pm I think brass is not necessarily more valuable in more modern lamps but this particularly company made specialty lamps sold in better lighting stores. The brass used is most often imported and of poor quality or diffused quality with applications to make it appear more antique. The company is actually Tin. Chi. and these lamps are imported. Here, the lamps retailed between $50. and 125.00. At the time I thought they were still priced to high. Even they have a unique appeal, my guess is the parrot went for more then it's original retail. I think depending on the one you are looking at and if it fits your personal decorating needs - and is within your budget - go for it. This is just the type of piece that many moons down the road could capture attention.
I also would be cautious of on-line auction bidding, particularly Live Auctioneers. I have seen a lot of repros which the seller claims is real. Because Tin Chi marks and dates their pieces they are original to the company. But then again, any item even recently marketed can be reproduced.
Comment by Beth Liles on October 23, 2011 at 7:41pm On a further note, I can't find information about the TinChi Brassware Company anywhere on the net.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Comment by Beth Liles on October 23, 2011 at 7:34pm Is anyone familiar with the lamp brand TinChi?
The one pictured below sold on Live Auctioneers for $225
I have an opportunity to purchase one (for a great deal less), different animal, but released the same year as this one (1996)
I would assume since they are created in brass they are valuable, but how can I tell if the one I'm looking at is a fake?
