Hi Everyone ! I really wasn't looking for an antique trunk when I bought this, just wanted something cool and different for my living room. I do not want to pay hundreds of dollars to fix the paint job or for it to be restored because I like those kinds of things to be imperfect. But in this case it looks like someone slapped lipstick on a pig when looking at it up close. ;-)
#1 for the fun of it, Anyone know how old this thing may be? The inside is definitely old and the bottom tells me a lot. The tiny little wheels and the original metal finish tell me that this thing is at least real and not a shabby attempt to reproduce. You can see that someone papered the inside at one point. It is wood with tin wrapped around it. The wood under the metal is a reddish color. I tried finding something exactly the same on the links provided in this group but nothing.
#2 HOW IN THE WORLD AM I GOING TO FIX THIS "RESTORATION" ATTEMPT?! The hinges have been painted in a very ugly fake gold paint, the black is shiny and the tin is lifting in places at the bottom exposing the old wood. (which would be fine if it weren't for the god-awful semi-gloss black paint over top). Should I tape off the wood, repaint the hinges with something prettier and use a softer matte black and call it a day? . I want to keep the handles on it, I love the worn leather.
