We found this checker board in a house we bought. It says Archarena and April 1897 on it. The playing pieces were in the box along with the sticks.  The netting is there, but with some holes.  The back has a game board on it too with wires, one of which is missing.  Is it as old as 1897? What would the value be?

Hi Susan - I think what you have there is an old Caren game - it's fun and was very popular - goggle it.

Your pieces look to be bakelite - an early plastic - which would validate your date - or at least at the turn of the 20th century.

Values are not great - but decent - especially if it is complete with all parts there. Nice find!

Hi Susan,

Very nice antique Archarena game board you have there. You may be interested in the following link, as it could help you date yours. Looks like they were making these as early as 1892, and I see no reason to believe that yours would not be from 1897. I've only briefly looked around for value and would not care to give a 'guestiment' at this time.
